About This Course
A child’s health status, a safe but challenging learning environment and proper nutrition affect the care, nurturance and optimal physical and cognitive development of the young child. It is vital that early childhood educators, parents and other professionals understand and value the
important role they play in promoting children’s health and fostering their development of healthy attitudes, values and practices. Information on topics such as allergies, food safety, menu planning etc. will be covered under the nutritional aspect. Safety is always a critical concern when working with young children. Information on creating safe indoor and outdoor environments will be discussed.
This module aims not only to help teachers develop basic skills and knowledge in basic first aid and emergency management, but also in detecting and understanding child abuse and neglect.
What You'll Learn
1. The ability to understand:
a. Rationale for ensuring health, safety, nutritional and hygiene standards
b. Rationale for procedures for the handling of illnesses, accidents and emergencies
c. Basic first-aid for infants and young children
d. The identification of signs and symptoms of basic ailments in children to seek medical assistance
e. Common ailments in young children
f. The identification of signs and symptoms of common allergies
g. Common food allergies in infants and young children
h. Basic nutritional needs of children
i. The practices of safe food-handling and general sanitation
j. Appropriate care-giving practices
2. The ability to:
a. Ensure a safe and healthy physical environment for children by following
regulations regarding basic health, hygiene, and safety, based on an
understanding of their impact on children’s overall wellbeing
b. Ensure quality and timely care-giving practices to meet the needs of each child, based on hygiene standards
c. Adhere to procedures for illnesses, accidents and emergencies
d. Promote healthy eating habits of children by ensuring a balanced diet based on nutritional standards
e. Identify and report suspected emotional distress, abuse and neglect of children in appropriate ways
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have:
a. 3 GCE ‘O’ level credits including a grade C6 in GCE ‘O’ level English Language OR Any English Language Acceptable Alternatives
OR
b. 10 years of formal education and passed state exam with credits in 3 different subjects including a credit at least C6 in EL1 or any English Language Acceptable Alternatives
