Advanced Certificate in Applied Data Science and Analytics (I) Module 1: Introduction to Statistics and Data Processing Using Excel
About This Course
While the term "data science" is not new, its meaning and significance have evolved over time. Initially coined in the 1960s as a synonym for statistics, it gained formal recognition from computer science professionals in the late 1990s. It wasn't until a decade later that data science emerged as a distinct field encompassing data design, collection, and analysis, extending its influence beyond academic circles. Despite the growing demand, human resource surveys consistently highlight the challenge of recruiting data scientists. Therefore, it is prudent to upskill existing employees with foundational data science skills, benefiting both individual careers and organisations. This programme is designed to empower participants with essential skills, enabling them to confidently apply data science techniques in their daily roles, fostering professional growth, and significantly enhancing organisational operations.
The programme will cover Fundamentals of Statistics, Visual analytics using Tableau, Data processing using Python, Machine Learning algorithms and their applications, and culminating into a final practicum to simulate applications at the workplace.
Module 1 introduces using statistics to solve business problems. Participants will refresh their knowledge of basic statistics, data description, and data preparation. They will use Excel for visual data analysis, determine relationships between variables, and predict outcomes using regression. The module includes practical exercises with datasets, group presentations (up to 5 participants) on day 3, and a quiz to assess understanding. This hands-on approach ensures participants can effectively apply statistical methods to real-world business scenarios.
What You'll Learn
• Learn the fundamentals of Statistics for business usage
• Appreciate the variety of applications of Statistics for analysing data and drawing insights through charts etc. using Excel
• Be familiar with the different data sources, data types and data quality issues when analysing data.
• Learn to do simple predictions using Excel by applying simple linear regression theory
Entry Requirements
This programme is structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience. Participants are required to complete the modules in the designated sequence to ensure a solid understanding of each topic before moving on to the next.
