About This Course
Part A: Foundation and Practices of Early Childhood Care and Education
Sound practice in the provision of education and care is grounded in clear understanding of local cultural and historical contexts as well as knowledge of global developments. Basic understanding of what educating young children is all about is important as these factors determine the quality of experiences that will be provided for them by teachers of young children. This module will trace the historical roots and influences on early childhood education, gives an overview of growth, policies, licensing requirements, quality, role and status of early childhood care and education in Singapore.
Part B: Centre’s Philosophy and Vision, Mission and Values
Vision, mission and values are of core importance as they form the core ideas of practices in the centres. This module encourages students to demonstrate and uphold the childcare centre’s vision, mission and values through maintaining professional ethics in daily practice. It also includes articulating the centre’s rationale to various stakeholders, developing a personal set of beliefs and values as an educator and sharing feedback to ensure the relevance of the vision, mission and values.

a. An overview of the development of and perspectives on early childhood care and education
b. Approaches and models of early childhood care and education
c. Overview of Singapore’s early childhood education
d. Policies, licensing requirements, teacher certification and training requirements in Singapore
e. Philosophy and Goals of Early Childhood Programmes
Part B: Centre’s Philosophy and Vision, Mission and Values
At the end of the module, participants should have:
1. The ability to understand:
a. The centre’s vision, mission and values
b. The rationale behind the centre’s vision, mission and values and its long term direction
c. How one’s actions support the centre’s objectives
d. The importance of maintaining professional ethics to uphold the centre’s vision, mission and values
e. Strategies to support the centre’s vision, mission and values
2. The ability to:
a. Be able to identify key stakeholders
b. Articulate to key stakeholders the rationale behind the vision, mission and values of the centre
c. Align daily practice to the centre’s vision, mission and values
d. Support the centre’s vision, mission and values by demons
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have:
* 5 GCE ‘O’ level credits including a grade C6 in GCE ‘O’ level English Language OR Any English Language Acceptable Alternatives
OR
* 10 years of formal education in English as a medium of instruction and passed state exam with credits in 5 different subjects OR required to pass English Language
OR
* Degree with English as medium of instruction from state recognised university OR required to pass English Language Acceptable Alternatives
