About This Course

This module prepares students with the ability to ensure a safe and healthy physical environment for children by following regulations regarding basic health, hygiene, and safety. It includes adherence to procedures for handling illnesses, accidents and emergencies, promoting healthy eating habits of children by ensuring a balanced diet and teaching and modelling good nutrition, hygiene and safety practices. It also includes communicating openly with colleagues, families and professionals with regards to health and safety matters, and keeping up-to-date on safe care-giving practices.

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, participants should have:

1. The ability to understand:
a. Rationale for ensuring health, safety, nutritional and hygiene standards
b. Immunisation of children for enrolment
c. Rationale for procedures for the handling of illnesses, accidents and emergencies
d. Basic first-aid for infants and young children
e. The identification of signs and symptoms of basic ailments in children to seek medical assistance
f. Common ailments in young children
g. The identification of signs and symptoms of common allergies
h. Common allergies in young children
i. Basic nutritional needs of children
j. Management of children with food allergies
k. The practices of safe food handling and general sanitation

2. The ability to:
a. Ensure a safe and healthy physical environment for children by following regulations regarding basic health, hygiene, and safety
b. Identification, managing and reporting child abuse
c. Adhere to procedures for handling illnesses, accidents and emergencies
d. Manage Incident and reporting
e. Promote healthy eating habits of children by ensuring a balanced diet
f. Teach and model good nutrition, hygiene and safety practices
g. Food storage and hygienic milk preparation

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have:

* 5 GCE ‘O’ level credits including a grade C6 in GCE ‘O’ level English Language OR Any English Language Acceptable Alternatives
OR
* 10 years of formal education in English as a medium of instruction and passed state exam with credits in 5 different subjects OR required to pass English Language
OR
* Degree with English as medium of instruction from state recognised university OR required to pass English Language Acceptable Alternatives
