About This Course
This module provides an in-depth view of health and safety issues, policies, and procedures necessary for a safe infant / toddler day care centre. Emphasis is made on the safety and health routines, hygiene, nutrition, and food preparation, storage, feeding and dressing procedures. In addition, common illnesses and diseases affecting very young children and preventive measures for handling such epidemic outbreaks will be covered. Current health, safety practices and preventive measures for indoor and outdoor activities will be discussed in the context of environment and programme planning. Students will also be taught how to recognise and report suspected child abuse, and injury prevention for young children. Other topics include procedures for handling sick children first aid and medication administration at the centre.

a. Ensure a safe and healthy physical environment for children by following regulations regarding basic health, hygiene, and safety, based on an understanding of their impact on children’s overall wellbeing
b. Ensure quality and timely care-giving practices to meet the needs of each child, based on hygiene standards
c. Adhere to procedures for illnesses, accidents and emergencies
d. Promote healthy eating habits of children by ensuring a balanced diet
based on nutritional standards
e. Identify and report suspected emotional distress, abuse and neglect of
children in appropriate ways
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have:
a. Minimum Secondary 4 education* or completed 10 years of formal education* and
b. At least an average SOA in the WPL series, including an SOA 5 for WPL-Writing
*Official documents are required to show completion of 10 years of education. Medium of instruction is to be in English.
