About This Course

Daily experiences provide great opportunities of learning for the very young. An understanding of this will enable educarers to use natural opportunities to enhance infants and toddlers’ learning. In this module, students will explore the importance of play and its functions in children’s learning and development. With the educational functions of play, emphasis will be given using play to enrich the infant / toddler curriculum.
Students will also learn how to plan and present play activities and materials for areas of the infant / toddler curriculum based on observations of their development and needs

At the end of the module, participants should have:

1. The ability to understand:
a. Developmental theories
b. Developmental stages of children from birth to age 3
c. Different areas of children’s growth and development
d. Expected milestones (developmental stages) across different aspects of children’s growth and development
e. Strategies to support children’s holistic development
f. Safety and Care of Infants
g. A range of teaching, learning and care giving approaches that meet the needs of young children
h. The relevant Curriculum Frameworks utilised in Singapore
i. How children learn concepts through sensory experiences, exploration, play, interactions and inquiry

2. The ability to:
a. Contribute to planning and implementation of teaching, learning and care-giving approaches, taking into account the developmental stages and backgrounds of children

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have:
a. Minimum Secondary 2* or minimum 8 years of formal education * and
b. At least an average SOA 4 in the WPL series

*Official documents are required to show completion of 8 years of education. Medium of instruction is to
be in English.
